Bernette 05 Crafter Sewing Machine Review – Overview of Features and Functions

The bernette 05 CRAFTER is a heavy-duty mechanical sewing machine for beginners and everyday home sewists who want durability over a long feature list. It is part of the bernette 05 series from bernette, alongside the better-equipped bernette 05 ACADEMY. The Crafter keeps the same core sewing engine and stitch set as the Academy. The trade-off is a lighter accessory pack and no half-speed power switch.

It is still a solid, portable machine at about 16 lb (around 7.3 kg), with roughly 6.5″ (165 mm) to the right of the needle and a stainless steel sewing bed. We tested the Academy, which shares the same motor, through 16 layers of lightweight denim without trouble. That same power is what you get here. Check the product box below for the current dollar price.

Features

Everything important sits on the front: tension, needle position, stitch width, stitch length, and stitch selector. The knobs are large and rubber-coated, so they are easy to turn without slipping. The metal base feels sturdy, and the orange-and-white squared shape gives it a semi-industrial look without making the machine hard to read.

Setup

Dial markings are clear, so first stitches come quickly. Use the bernette 05 series Quick Start Guide and the official Crafter user manual (PDF) (also as an online manual). Stitch length around 2 to 3 is a good everyday start. Keep turning the selector for stretch and decorative options such as triple stitch or triple zigzag.

Threading follows the printed path on the machine. The spool sits on top under a spool cap, then down through tension and take-up. The built-in needle threader is a genuine help on a mechanical model, and the side cutter gives you a clean start length. There is no electronic needle up/down stop, so park the needle with the hand wheel when you need it. Bernette also publishes short video guides for the 05 series.

The top-loading bobbin is easy to change. Remove the accessory tray for the free arm when you sew cuffs or sleeves. Bobbin winding includes a cutter that leaves a sensible start length. Use Class 15 plastic bobbins that match the machine, and standard domestic flat-shank needles (130/705 H). Accessory storage lives in the tray under the bed. Unlike the Academy, there is no finger guard in the box.

Performance

Top speed is up to 1,100 stitches per minute, the same as the Academy. What you do not get is the Academy’s half-speed power mode (around 650 spm). On bulky or awkward work you rely more on foot control. That is manageable, just a little less forgiving if you are still learning pedal feel.

Adjustable presser foot pressure helps layers and mixed fabrics feed more evenly, which is uncommon in this class and worth using. The two LEDs keep the needle area bright. Stitch quality on the shared 05 chassis was solid in our denim-layer test on the Academy, and the Crafter uses that same sewing platform. You get utility, stretch, and a useful blanket stitch, plus one-step buttonholes, without computerized helpers.

Included feet cover the basics: zigzag, buttonhole with slide, zipper, invisible zipper, overlock, and blindstitch. That is enough to start garments, hems, zippers, and edge finishing. If you want the non-stick foot, open embroidery foot, hemmer, edgestitch, darning/embroidery, button sew-on, extension table, or finger guard, those are optional or part of the Academy kit. See our Crafter vs Academy comparison for the side-by-side accessory picture.

Strengths and limitations

Strengths

  • Same tough 05 sewing platform and 1,100 spm motor as the Academy
  • Clear dials, strong starter stitch set, and adjustable foot pressure
  • 6 mm stitch width and one-step buttonhole on a mechanical machine
  • Lower cost of entry than the Academy for the same core sewing ability

Limitations

  • Only 6 presser feet in the box (Academy includes 12)
  • No half-speed power switch, no included finger guard, no included extension table
  • Fully mechanical: no needle up/down button or automatic tension
  • Speed control on thick or awkward work depends more on the pedal

Ideal user

The Crafter suits beginners, learners, and anyone who wants a durable basic workhorse for garments, mending, and everyday projects without paying for the Academy accessory bundle. Choose the 05 ACADEMY instead if you want the half-speed switch, finger guard, extension table, and the fuller foot set from day one.

Verdict

The bernette 05 CRAFTER is a strong basic mechanical machine: good build, useful stitch width, free arm, and enough stitches for real home sewing. For the features you actually sew with every day, it remains one of the better entry-level heavy-duty options we have used. If you already know you want more feet and speed limiting in the box, spend up to the Academy. For current US pricing, use the product box below.
