The bernette 05 ACADEMY is a heavy-duty mechanical sewing machine aimed at classrooms, workshops, and home sewists who want a tough basic machine more than a long feature list. Features

Setup
Controls are labeled on the machine, so getting from unboxing to a straight stitch is straightforward. For everyday seaming, stitch length around 2 to 3 on the dial is a sensible start. Buttonhole settings are marked on the selector. Keep turning for stretch and decorative options such as triple stitch or triple zigzag when you are on knits.
Threading follows the printed path on the machine: spool on top, spool cap on, then down through the tension and take-up. The built-in needle threader is a real help on a mechanical model. Use the side cutter for a clean start length. There is no electronic needle up/down stop, so finish with the hand wheel when you need the needle parked. Bobbin winding is onboard and runs with the foot control. The top-loading bobbin is easy to swap without stripping the machine down, and the free arm is there when you need cuffs or sleeves.
It takes standard domestic flat-shank needles (130/705 H). Stick with the Class 15 plastic bobbins that match the machine. The finger guard ships ready for classroom or nervous first sessions and comes off quickly when you want a clear view of the needle area. Accessory storage sits in the tray under the bed.
Performance
At full speed the Academy will push toward 1,100 stitches per minute, which is quick for a home mechanical. Flip the power switch into the limited mode and the ceiling drops to about 650 spm while needle power stays the same. That slower cap is useful on bulky seams, awkward shapes, or anytime you want control without baby-stepping the pedal the whole time.
Stitch quality held up well in our denim-layer test, and the adjustable foot pressure helps keep feed even when thickness changes. The two LEDs cut down on shadows over the needle plate. Because it is mechanical, you will not get automatic tension, needle positioning at stop, or a screen full of stitch previews. What you get instead is predictable dial behavior and enough stitch variety for garments, mending, knits, appliqué-style blanket stitch work, and one-step buttonholes. A fine buttonhole balance adjustment lets you tighten or open the bead density a little to match the fabric.
Slide the extension table on after removing the accessory box when you need support for larger pieces. The stainless steel bed and heavier base help the machine stay put when you are pushing thick work through.
