The Bernette 05 series is a mechanical starter range from Bernette (Bernina’s more affordable sister brand; see also bernette.com). Right now the main models are the bernette 05 Crafter and the bernette 05 Academy. Both are solid, no-screen machines with the same motor and stitch set. Soft U.S. pricing usually sits in an approachable beginner bracket, with the Academy costing more because of extras. A full comparison table is at the bottom of this page.
Bernette 05 Crafter vs Bernette 05 Academy
In sewing performance these two are very close. Both run up to about 1,100 stitches per minute, with a 6 mm (about 1/4 in) stitch width and 4 mm (about 5/32 in) stitch length, and both offer 30 stitch types. That is a useful set for an entry-level mechanical machine: enough utility and stretch stitches for garments and home projects without a computerized interface. The real differences are accessories, the Academy’s two-speed setting, and included extras such as the extension table and finger guard.

Both machines include adjustable presser foot pressure, which matters more than beginners expect. Loosen pressure on thick fabrics so layers feed without leaving deep marks; tighten it a little on thin fabrics so the foot does not skate. Thread tension is also adjustable. The default is usually around 4; if bobbin thread shows on top, lower the upper tension. If the top thread loops underneath, raise it. That small dial is what keeps seams balanced when you move between cotton, knits, and heavier cloth.

Both also have a balance dial for stretch stitches and buttonholes. If stretch stitches or the left bead of a buttonhole look too loose, turn the balance dial as the manual directs; if they look too tight or bunched, adjust the other way. You also get an onboard thread cutter for one-handed snipping and drop feed dogs for darning or free-motion practice.

bernette 05 Crafter
The Crafter is the simpler package: dials on the front, no learning curve beyond matching stitch numbers on the panel, and six presser feet that cover most first projects. Bernette’s instructional videos for the 05 series are worth watching for stitch selection and buttonholes. Included feet:
- Zigzag foot
- Buttonhole foot
- Zipper foot
- Invisible-zipper foot
- Overlock foot
- Blindstitch foot
Sewing space to the right of the needle is about 6.5 in (165 mm), lit by two LEDs. The main drawback versus the Academy is the lack of a two-speed limiter on the power control. If you are teaching someone new, that missing speed choice is the biggest reason to spend up.
bernette 05 Academy

The Academy sews like the Crafter but ships with a fuller kit: extension table, finger guard, two-speed setting on the power control, and 12 presser feet total (six more than the Crafter). The speed setting is the feature learners appreciate most, because it caps how fast the machine runs while they build control. Extra feet included beyond the Crafter set:
- Zigzag foot with non-stick sole
- Darning / embroidery foot
- Button sew-on foot
- Hemmer foot
- Open embroidery foot
- Edgestitch foot
If you already own extra feet and are confident at the pedal, the Crafter saves money without giving up stitch quality. If you want classroom-friendly speed control and fewer accessory purchases later, the Academy is the better buy.
