Brief history

The company’s roots go back to 1689, when a royal arms factory was established in the Swedish town of Huskvarna (the name behind Husqvarna). The factory was sold to private owners in 1757 and took the Husqvarna name, continuing to make guns into the mid-1800s. As demand for arms declined and the Industrial Revolution reshaped manufacturing, the company added household products such as bicycles and sewing machines. Sewing machine production began in 1872.

Early successes included the Freja model, which sewed even stitch lines and used enclosed gearing. Versions of Freja were produced into the mid-20th century (production is noted through 1925 and into the 1940s for related iterations). Husqvarna machines also became common in European schools for reliability and ease of use. In 2022 the brand marked 150 years of sewing machine production.

Husqvarna Viking today

Husqvarna Viking is owned by SVP Worldwide, a private American company focused on consumer sewing machines. Viking Sewing Machines was bought by Kohlberg & Co in 2006 and merged into SVP Worldwide. SVP brings together Singer, Viking, and Pfaff. Machines are no longer made in Sweden, but R&D there still designs new models.
