Elna is a Swiss-founded sewing brand with a long history of free-arm and home sewing machines. Today it is owned by Janome and offers mechanical, computerized, embroidery, and overlocker models for beginners through advanced sewists. Brief history

Elna has roots in the 1930s and began home-machine production in 1940. Over more than eight decades the brand moved from early free-arm mechanicals into electrical and computerized machines. Key chapters are summarized below.

Origins and the free-arm idea

In 1933, Spanish engineer Dr. Ramon Casas Robert studied an antique sewing machine at home and later visited friends who ran a corset factory. The specialized industrial machines with cylindrical arms for stitching fabric tubes sparked his idea: home sewists also needed a smaller free arm for sleeves and trouser legs. That concept became the first modern free-arm home sewing machine.

The Elna 1

The Elna Number 1 was the first free-arm home sewing machine. A working prototype is believed to have been completed by 1934. It had a free arm, an internal motor, and a light. The carry case was cut to fit around the free arm and extend the sewing surface. These early machines are still valued by collectors and home sewists for their metal construction.

Move to Switzerland

The Spanish Civil War (1936 to 1939) forced Casas Robert to continue the work in Switzerland. He founded Electrina with a group of businessmen. The Elna name later came from Electrina. When more capital and modern factories were needed, Tavaro SA in Geneva (a maker of precise timing mechanisms) acquired the rights and hired him as a consultant. The first home machines were produced in 1940 and sold well.

Later models and expansion

Exports grew after World War II, from 1948 onward. The Elna 1 was produced until 1952 (exact production numbers are unknown), then succeeded by the Elna Supermatic. The Star Series debuted in 1964, and the Lotus Series began in 1968. Tavaro continued developing the brand with the Elnapress in 1973, electrical machines in 1978, and computerized machines in 1989, while expanding manufacturing and international sales.

Bankruptcy and Janome ownership

In the 1990s, rising development costs and slower sales hit many European makers. Tavaro filed for bankruptcy and was auctioned in 1995. Elna is no longer a standalone manufacturing company. In August 2006, Janome Sewing Machine Company Ltd (Tokyo) purchased the global operations of Elna International Corporation SA. Elna’s warranty (as described for this market) covers parts and labor for two years from the purchase date, with no deductible. Extended coverage of one, two, or three additional years may be available if you choose it within 30 days of purchase, for a total of up to five years.
