Elna Excellence 780+ Review: A High-End Sewing Machine for Serious Sewists

The Elna eXcellence 780+ sits in Elna’s top-tier eXcellence lineup and is aimed at serious sewists. It combines a large sewing space, Dual Feed Plus, and a full-color touchscreen with enough stitch depth for quilting, garments, and decorative work that needs consistent control.

This review covers features, setup, performance, and who should buy it. US street pricing often lands in a high four-figure range (commonly talked about around $3,500 to $4,000), but dealer deals vary, so confirm the current dollar price before you buy.

Key Features of the Elna eXcellence 780+

The 780+ is built for large, complex projects. Official highlights include:

  • 350 built-in stitches with a 9 mm maximum stitch width and 5 mm maximum stitch length
  • 11 automatic one-step buttonholes and 3 alphabets / typefaces (including 9 mm capitals and numbers)
  • Long-arm sewing space about 280 x 120 mm (roughly 11 x 4.7 in), plus an extra-long free arm about 150 mm (about 5.9 in)
  • Maximum sewing speed up to 1,060 stitches per minute
  • Full-color HD LCD touchscreen about 62.8 x 110.9 mm (roughly 2.5 x 4.4 in)
  • Removable Dual Feed Plus (wide and narrow), 7-piece retractable feed dog, and automatic thread tension plus automatic foot pressure
  • Tapering function, ruler work mode, variable zigzag via knee lifter, Stitch Composer software, and about 3 MB built-in memory
  • Machine size about 528 x 321 x 243 mm (roughly 20.8 x 12.6 x 9.6 in); weight about 13.2 kg (29 lb)
  • 91 needle positions; pattern combinations up to 100 stitches; Favorite Stitch customization

The extended bed and bright LED lighting (including a retractable high light on many packages) keep the work area open and easy to see. The touchscreen puts stitch choice, foot recommendations, and adjustments in one place, which helps during long sessions.

Quilting Accessories and Specialty Feet

Quilters get a long arm, large throat space, and an extra-wide extension table as standard on typical packages. Dual Feed Plus improves control on layered fabrics for precision piecing and tricky materials. Specialty presser feet usually include open-toe options for free-motion quilting, a clip-on foot system for quick swaps, and an adjustable ruler foot for ruler and template work.

Professional HP Foot and HP Needle Plate

The Professional HP foot and needle plate combo is built for accuracy. It helps with piecing and topstitching where a clean, even seam matters. Pairing a 1/4″ seam foot with the straight-stitch HP plate improves visibility and helps keep curves smooth and seams straight. It is a noticeable upgrade if you do detailed work often.

Dual Feed Plus System

Dual Feed Plus works with the seven-piece feed dog to move fabric from top and bottom. That helps match prints, keep layers aligned, and reduce puckering. The detachable Dual Feed Plus unit supports wide and narrow feet, so you can keep that extra fabric control without giving up specialty foot options.

One-Step Needle Plate Converter

A one-step converter lets you swap needle plates with a press of a button. If you move often between straight stitch and zigzag or decorative work, it saves real time and keeps the workflow cleaner.

Setup and Getting Started

Front-panel controls cover start/stop, reverse, thread cutter, needle position, and presser foot lift. A built-in needle threader and automatic thread tension reduce early guesswork. Automatic foot pressure and the programmable thread cutter further cut setup friction once you learn the menus.

There is a lot here if you are coming from a basic machine, so plan a practice session: walk through the touchscreen, try Dual Feed Plus on scrap layers, and test the HP plate for piecing. Elna’s instruction manual is available online and walks through threading, stitch selection, and specialty functions. Access the manual here. Warranty coverage is typically handled through your authorized Elna dealer in the US; confirm the current terms when you purchase.

Performance

In use, the 780+ feels comfortable on longer projects. Stitch quality stays even and reliable through extended sessions, and the machine runs smoothly and relatively quietly for its class. At up to 1,060 spm, it keeps pace with quilting and garment construction without feeling frantic if you use the speed control.

With 350 stitches, variable zigzag, tapering, ruler work mode, and three alphabets, creative range is broad. Dual Feed Plus and the HP tools are where the machine earns its keep on layered quilts and precise seams. The large throat space means less wrestling when you move a bulky project under the needle.

Strengths and Limitations

Strengths

  • Dual Feed Plus, HP foot and plate, and one-step needle plate converter that improve precision and workflow
  • 350 stitches, 11 buttonholes, and 3 alphabets covering most project types
  • Large workspace, free arm, and strong lighting that reduce strain on long sessions
  • Intuitive front controls and a color touchscreen despite the advanced feature set
  • Solid build with steady stitch quality during extended use

Limitations

  • Large and heavy (about 13.2 kg / 29 lb), so it needs dedicated space and is not a portable pick
  • Price is high for beginners or casual hobbyists
  • Learning curve if you are moving up from a simpler machine

Who the Elna eXcellence 780+ Is For

The 780+ fits experienced sewists and serious hobbyists who quilt or sew complex projects often and want Dual Feed Plus, ruler work options, and a large throat in one machine. It is a strong match if you are willing to invest in a feature-rich setup that can grow with your skills.

It is less ideal if you need something compact, portable, or budget-friendly, or if you mainly sew simple repairs and do not need quilting-focused tools.

  1. I have the Elna Excellence 680 and it has utility features for 1/4″ and 1/2″ needle positions for 1/4 and 1/2″ seams. Does the Elna Excellence 780+ have this feature? I know it has the 1/4″ feet but the needle option is so much better.

  2. Thank you for this article! I have had mine for over a year and wanted a comprehensive manual, the one in the States is laughable. So happy this was out there!!
