We’ve got the question on which machine is the best and what the differences are between the Bernette 05 Academy vs the Bernette 37 sewing machines from the Bernette brand. The full comparison table with all included features and functions is available at the bottom of the page. The Bernette 05 Academy is from the new Bernette 05 series of sewing machines and the Bernette 37 are from the new Bernette 30 series.
Both sewing machines are two great options for anyone interested in getting started or are looking for a basic machine at home for more sporadic use.
Overview Bernette 05 Academy Sewing Machine
Key Features of the Bernette 05 Academy:
- Sewing speed (1100 spm)
- 30 essential stitches
- Super stretch (Lycra) stitch and blanket stitch
- Finger guard
- 2 LED sewing lights
- Power switch with speed limitation
- High-quality extension table
- Adjustable presser foot pressure
The Bernette 05 Academy is a great and economical machine that is used a lot of times for classrooms in schools and sewing classes. The machine comes with a whole bunch of accessories and extra feet and an included extension table. It is a very simplistic machine so if you’re looking for a machine that has a lot of things packed into the box and is fairly easy to use. This one is a great one to turn to.
The Bernette 05 Academy does have a couple decorative stitches and some of the manual knobs like we’re used to on some of the older mechanical machines. This is nice as they are very easy to use when trying to set stitch length and stitch width. Then of course it also has a needle threader which you can’t go wrong with.
Overview Bernette 37 Sewing Machine
Key Features of the Bernette 37:
- LCD screen
- Sewing speed (700 spm)
- Stitch overview and Quick Start Guide
- Five different buttonholes
- 50 stitches, including decorative and quilting stitches
- 7 mm stitch width

- Speed regulator
Looking at the Bernette 37 it looks a little bit different. It is part of the Bernette 30 series and is actually a slightly computerised machine and it does have a lot of decorative stitches. You will find them in the booklet that is inside the drawer on the machine. It does also have a wonderful needle threader that you can never go wrong with. Some things that I personally like about the b37 is the speed control on the front and then also you’ve got some of those extra features, like a tie off button and a start/stop button.
Comparison Bernette 37 and Bernette 05 Academy
The Bernette b05 Academy and Bernette b37 are two distinct models of sewing machines catering to different needs and preferences in sewing. Here’s a brief comparison based on their features:
- Machine Type: The b05 Academy is mechanical, making it potentially more straightforward and durable, ideal for beginners or those who prefer manual adjustments. The b37, however, is computerised, offering more precision, ease of use, and additional features for advanced sewists.
- Hook System: Both machines use a drop-in hook system, which is easier to load and maintain compared to front-loading systems.
- Workspace: The b37 offers slightly more space to the right of the needle (170 mm) compared to the b05 Academy (165 mm), which can make handling larger projects more comfortable.
- Screen: The b37 features an LCD screen for easier stitch selection and adjustments, whereas the b05 Academy does not have a screen, relying on manual adjustments.
- Sewing Capabilities: The b05 Academy has a higher maximum sewing speed (1100 stitches per minute) than the b37 (700 stitches per minute), but the b37 offers more stitch patterns (50 compared to 30), a wider maximum stitch width (7 mm compared to 6 mm), and a longer maximum stitch length (5 mm compared to 4 mm). These features make the b37 more versatile for a variety of projects.
- Features: The b37 includes several features that the b05 Academy lacks, such as a start/stop button, needle stop up/down, twin needle capability, speed regulator, and 2-step presser foot lifter, enhancing its functionality for more advanced sewing tasks.
- Presser Foot Pressure: The b05 Academy allows for manual adjustment of presser foot pressure, a feature not available on the b37, which could be important for sewing different types of fabric.
- Standard Accessories: The b05 Academy comes with more presser foot soles (12 compared to 5), potentially offering more versatility out of the box. It also includes an extension table and finger guard, which are either optional or not available with the b37.
- Automatic Features: The b37 includes an automatic bobbin winder and automatic securing function, which are absent in the b05 Academy, adding to the convenience and efficiency of sewing projects.
Depending on your skill and how much you will be using the machine should matter in your selection but overall they are great basic machines for you to get started with. Both are beginner machines but if you want a very simple machine, with easy to use manual knobs and want to keep your budget low, the Bernette 05 Academy would be a good choice. If you are thinking on doing some more decorative stitches, want a machine that have a few more helpful features and functions and the Bernette 37 will work great.
