Brief history

For more than a century, Janome (pronounced Ja-No-Mey) has been linked with home sewing machines. On October 16, 1921, businessman Yosaku Ose established the PINE sewing machine plant in Japan. He replaced the common rectangular “shuttle-type” bobbin with a circular design that improved speed and efficiency. Users nicknamed the new bobbin Janome, Japanese for “snake’s eye,” and the name stuck. It became a registered trademark in 1935. The company’s first sewing machine factory opened in 1936. In 1954 the business name Janome Sewing Machine Co., Ltd. was formally adopted. In the mid-1990s the Janome Group became Janome UK Ltd. as part of its international expansion. At the firm’s 100th anniversary in 2021, the company name changed to JANOME Corporation.

According to Janome, more than 60 million Janome sewing machines have been sold worldwide, including more than 2 million in the UK. The brand exports to more than 100 countries and remains a major presence in the UK market with a wide selection of sewing machines and overlockers.
